The Gospel According To

MARK

The most simple and earliest-dated gospel, this text, commonly called The Gospel According to Mark, is the first of the synoptic gospels, though it is commonly placed second in canonical order. Due to its simple nature, one might find it very strange that emphasis is not placed on the circumstance of Jesus' life or the world he inhabited; rather, Mark seems to stress that the person of Jesus, and his nature as the Son of God by extension, are far more important than the historical context of the work. As such Jesus' birth is not discussed, neither are his mother or family given any prominence over the other figures in this gospel. Christ is portrayed here as a surprisingly shy Messiah; he does not disclose his divine identity to his disciples, instead opting to reveal it in stages through his parables. The text culminates in Jesus' death and resurrection, although it shows great restraint when it comes to the resurrection narrative. The tomb is simply found empty, and an angel tells them that the Lord will meet them again in Galilee. The final verse of the original manuscripts has the women of Jesus' disciples not telling a living soul of what they had seen, because they had become so utterly terrified of Jesus' power over even the grave.

This book is apart of the free-to-use and distribute New Covenant Edition (NCE) that our group has put together, and it has been compared with the KJV, NKJV, and the NIV to make for a concise and fluid read. CHAPTER ONE
An introduction to the book; John the Baptist's ministry; Christ's baptism in the Jordan; Jesus' ministry begins.

1THE BEGINNING OF the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way.
The voice of one crying, 'In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
make straight his paths!'

4 John came baptizing in the wilderness, and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all those of the land of Judea and Jerusalem went out to him, and they were immersed by him in the Jordan river, confessing their sins. 6 And John was clothed in camel's hair, and a belt of leather was about his waist; he eats locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying,

7 "He who is mightier than I comes after me;
the strap of his sandals I am not worthy to loose.
8 I indeed have baptized you with water,
and he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit!

9 And it came to pass that in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and was immersed in the Jordan by John. 10 And immediately coming up from the water, he saw the heavens torn open, and the Spirit as a dove coming down upon him. 11 And a voice out of heaven said, You are my Son, the Beloved One, with whom I am well pleased. 12 And immediately the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness. 13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by the Satan; he was with the beasts, and the messengers served him. 14 And after John was seized, Jesus went into the Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 saying, The time has been fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has drawn near; repent, and believe in the good news! 16 And in passing by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 Jesus said to them, Come after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. 18 And having immediately left the nets, they followed him. 19 And having gone on a little ways, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother in their boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately he called them, and they went away after him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants. 21 And they went into Capernaum, and he entered into and taught in their houses of assembly on the Sabbath day. 22 And they were amazed at his teaching; he was indeed teaching them as one with authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Now there was in the house of assembly a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, saying, 24 "What is the matter between us and you, O Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!" 25 Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him! 26 And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions, and cried out with a loud voice, and came out of the him.
